We often get asked the question, ” Why does the VA Geek not have a way to purchase blocks of hours? Why don’t you charge by the hour?”
The answer is not quite as simple as you think.
For a business owner, it’s a matter of preference. What we offer here is a Value Based Model. That means that the service we provide you is based on the value that we offer you with our expertise in that service. Any time that you request a service from us, you will be provided a package rate and not an hourly rate. This is the reason why we choose not to offer our services by the hour:
1. Administrative Burden: Logging every second worked on a task is a lot of unnecessary administrative work. It also can be a problem if the person performing the work forgets to log time spent. There are also aspects that can’t be measured. Clients also don’t want to worry about minutes being rounded up to the next half hour and so forth. In my opinion, it’s also hard to determine, even with logs if you are getting your monies worth this way.
2. Stuck in the Middle: Let’s say that I was working on a project for you and with your hours purchased and I wasn’t finished yet and you ran out. I’d have to stop. I’d have to contact you with the logs of the hours and tell you where I stopped. I don’t like having unfinished projects and neither do you. What would be worse is if you were not ready to budget for more hours. Now your project is on hold.
3. Tug of War: You, as a business owner, want everything done in a timely manner and preferably as quickly as possible. On the other hand, the Virtual Assistant, who gets paid by the hour wants it to take longer. If he or she works too efficiently, they make less money. I’d rather place the value on the relationship and on the quality of the work that I return to you. My focus is not on how long it’s going to take or if I could speed it up or drag it out. It’s about giving you the quality you deserve.
4. How long does it take?: If you want a project done, do you have any idea how long it will take me? Heck, I don’t know how long it will take me specifically in hours and minutes. How do I account for research and for thinking and planning if it’s not tangible work? See the dilemma?
The service based model is not for everyone and no way is right or wrong. This is just the way that The VA Geek operates so that we can serve you efficiently to the best of our ability. Our goal is to serve you quickly, accurately and with a strong relationship built on trust.
