Using Facebook Groups for Accountability

One of the keys to success is finding accountability, especially in a learning environment like an online business school or a monthly training group. Other people that are in the group learning with you can partner up to help digest the material and make sure, most importantly, that what is being learned is being implemented.

A great way to work with other people is using Facebook groups for accountability. There are ways to do it through email, but that can be a little cumbersome. This way everyone can post and chat together, post links and ask questions. In most cases, this is where everyone would be learning anyhow, so another group in the same place makes managing everything easier on everyone.

Variety of skills: The best groups have members with expertise in different areas. The former tax accountant, the business coach, direct sales representative, virtual assistant, etc…  can all advise each other and provide different perspectives on the same topics. If everyone is in the same industry with the same background, you may have a lot in common, but you won’t be able to brainstorm as effectively.

Similar commitment level: The most important element may very well be a common level of commitment to your goals, whatever they may be. If one member is a little lax and the others are all gung-ho, the mismatch will soon drive everyone crazy. Everyone has to WANT to be in the group.

Accountability process: Find a way for everyone to hold each other accountable. If you have an assignment in your training, have everyone share what they came up with or talk about the problems that came up. Maybe you all want to find a way to blog more and keep consistent. For example, if people were struggling with blogging consistently, keep one day of the week when everyone shares so that you can all help each other stay focused AND give each other a boost in the Alexa rankings.

Resource-sharing: One of the most valuable roles an accountability group can play is providing recommendations and referrals. Find a great article, book, course or person to work with? Share it! Everyone can benefit. 

One final thing to keep in mind is that accountability groups, like friendships, are created differently. Some will last only as long as the course takes,but some may last only a few weeks or months. Be ready to let your group go if it’s no longer fitting your needs. It will be hard, but if it’s not helping you further your goal, it may be time to move up and on. Remember: too many groups can be detrimental to you too.
