My Thesis Comments Won't Show

I have been a long time lover of Thesis. Well, long in terms of themes. I’ve been using it for about two years. Recently, I upgraded to WordPress 4.0 (Benny) to keep up with the latest version. I waited the normal customary time — about 2 weeks ish — to wait for my plugins to catch-up for updates and then installed it. What I didn’t do, was read the upgrade issues with my theme. I may have missed it the first time,  or it wasn’t there yet, but either way, I didn’t see it.

In case you don’t know, I had two Thesis themed blogs. This one and my this one. I was using Thesis version 1.8.5. It’s older, but I liked the way it worked and didn’t want to change it.

I didn’t initially notice when I upgraded that my comments weren’t showing, but they stopped. People could leave comments, but couldn’t view them. If the comments link was clicked, the page simply refreshed. I thought it was a glitch.

On my second blog, this one you are reading, I had waited to upgrade for whatever reason and when I did it, all the blog links stopped working! Craziness, right? I was freaking out. Once I read my dashboard — should have done this earlier — I read that Thesis 1.8.5 does NOT play nice with WordPress 4.0.

Both blogs had different issues from the same cause. The comments issue is more common. Can it be fixed? Yep!

You have a few options:

1. Rollback to the earlier version of WordPress (3.9.2 or whatever you had)

2. Get the update that is available for Thesis 1.8.5 from DIY Themes

3. Be a nutter and scrap the framework all together and start over!

4. If you have 1.8.5 and didn’t upgrade yet and aren’t ready to do anything, don’t upgrade til you are ready or ask your web person

I chose option 3. Here’s why:

If you bought the $87 version of Thesis and you have had it more than a year, the updates are not free. At least this one isn’t. To fix your problem, you have to purchase another $87 version for another year (and hope that no more issues like this happen to buy it again next year) or get the forever license for $297.

If you are within the year, you can simply update from DIY themes (directions are on the website regarding this issue).

I broke up with Thesis. I wasn’t ready to pay $297 or $87 for each of my websites. I went with Genesis that I can use on both sites, one cost and updates for LIFE, not just a year.

Now, you may not be ready to be that drastic, but it may save you money in the long-run.

Rolling back to an earlier version of WordPress is not really easy for a beginner user, so ask a WordPress expert for help. Sadly, staying with the old version isn’t necessarily the best thing for your blog, so it may only be a costly temporary fix.

If this is you, deeply consider your options. After being a Thesis lover, I switched. Hence, the new look of the site as it is under construction. I hope spelling out why everything is happening and what you can do will help someone that wants to know why ” My Thesis Comments Don’t Show!”
