Graphics are a huge part of any social media presence. While it is nice to share other people’s content, if you want something to go viral, wouldn’t it be nice if it were your own work? Of course! There is a bit of a magic trick to getting your graphics right on social media. It is going to take some extra effort, but you will definitely look your very best.
Sizing Your Graphics For Social Media
Facebook: Out of all of the social media platforms, Facebook is the most forgiving when it comes to graphics displaying properly. The perfect size is 940X788. If you are going to be doing ads, you will need a 1,200X627. I’ve used images from Twitter and Instagram on Facebook and it still looked perfectly fine.
Twitter: This platform seems to get the brunt of poorly sized images. Many people look at Twitter as an afterthought or don’t use images there at all. They are so powerful that they are worth using and frequently. The perfect size for Twitter is 1024X512.
Pinterest: This is another platform that needs special attention or your content is not going to be repinned as much as it could be. Small and square images on Pinterest are going to get lost in the shuffle. When you pin your own content, you don’t want to just use the image that you created on the blog. You want your images there to be long and thin, not short and fat. The perfect Pinterest size is 735X1102.
Instagram: Now this is the place for images that are a perfect square– which never happens unless you intentionally size it that way. The good news is that Instagram now allows for landscape images. The perfect size for Instagram is 640X640 if you are still going for square. In most cases, cropping your pictures inside the Instagram app is going to butcher it. You can either now make it landscape OR expect for the sides to get cut off if you don’t make it the perfect size.
Graphics Sizing Tips and Tricks
Getting graphics the perfect size may seem like a daunting task, but it really, really is not. One trick you can use is to create your images to be 900X900. This will still display nicely on Twitter, but not perfect, good on Facebook and be the perfect square for Instagram. Only issue you will have is Pinterest. You ‘could’ use it, but you know why it won’t get as much attention as it deserves.
If you purchase graphics, you can always inquire about getting them in the 900×900 size or having them sized perfectly for each platform. It will be worth the extra investment.
Another magic trick that makes it SUPER easy is by using Canva at Work! There is a function called “Magic Resize” and believe me, it is just like magic. A little bit of adjustments and voila! You have the perfect size without needing to remember the dimensions. This is a paid service unlike the standard Canva which is free. I use it in my business and I get my money’s worth for sure.
If you don’t want to use Canva or don’t want the added expense, you can always do it in PicMonkey. You can change the size of your images, but keep in mind that it is going to stretch it to make it fit and could skew the crispness of your images or even make it wonky. It’s the down and dirty way to do it if you want to only make the image once and then just make it fit everywhere. I have used it for this purpose when I am not majorly changing the shape of the image and it works well for that.
There are lots of other tools out there, but these are my favorites! What do you use to get the perfect size for your social media graphics?
