Reality TV has a bad reputation associated with it. People spend hours and hours watching over the top drama that does nothing but waste time and prevent them from getting things done. However, I’ve found that the networks are getting wise and making shows that have had great success targeting the entrepreneur market. These reality tv shows for entrepreneurs can actually teach them ways to grow their business and avoid some common missteps and mistakes. These are some of my favorites that I have come to enjoy and I hope you will benefit from them too!
Reality TV for Entrepreneurs
Shark Tank – Out of all of the EntreTV, this one is definitely the most well-known and popular. Watching all of the seasons of this show would not be a waste of your time. If you have never seen the show it is having entrepreneurs who are established or trying to get their business off the ground vying for a chance to get an investment from one of the ‘sharks’. One of the biggest takeaways I have ever had from this show is “Know your numbers.” Many a good business lost their chance because they had no idea about the numbers in the business.
Follow the Leader – This is the newest of the EntreTV shows, but it does not disappoint. On this show, the host follows around an industry leader for two days to watch what they do. It is amazing to see behind the scenes as to what these business owners do and how they manage their time. The best episode of them all — and I know I am biased — is the one that featured Gary Vaynerchuk. It was so powerful to watch how he manages his time and it is not shocking that he is ridiculously successful.
The Profit – This EntreTV show really pushes home the power of Marcus Lemonis’ belief of People, Process and Product. One of the biggest takeaways from this show is the power of processes. Most business owners that I know do not have a business manual, nor do they have SOP’s (Standard Operating Procedures). They do it all and everything is inside their head and not on paper. It makes it difficult for them to outsource and make everything plug and play.
Beyond the Tank – This EntreTV is a spinoff of Shark Tank. It features what happens to entrepreneurs after they get a deal on Shark Tank and even showcases some that did not. As they say in the introduction, the real work begins after they get a deal. What they do with the money and if they listen to their sharks can make or break their business. Some have wild success and others completely fall flat. The big takeaway from this show is even if you make it big and think you have it all, that doesn’t mean that you can forget everything else and slack off. To stay ahead, takes a lot of work.
Billion Dollar Buyer – This EntreTV features billionaire mogul Tillman Fertitta and is somewhat similar to Shark Tank. He invests in businesses and places an order that is sometimes half or greater than an entire year revenue for the businesses. The biggest takeaway I have found is the power of have the right price and getting the cost correct and knowing where every penny goes in creating a product. Some good businesses lost their chance because they refused to get a price low enough for a big time investor.
There are lots of other EntreTV shows out there and most likely I’ve watched them. These are some of my favorites. I’d love to hear from you if you watched any of these or have a favorite that was not listed. What did you learn and what changes has the show prompted you to make in your business!
