Whether your website is new or has been established for some time, your site needs a good checking over. One of the worst things that can happen is that your website has a link to products or services and the links no longer work. That tells your potential customer that you don’t pay much attention to your website so you may not even really be active anymore. Not the impression you want to make, right?
The problem with the links may not even be your own. Here are some ways that your clients may find broken links:
1. Outside Content: If you link to outside content for your audience to reference and that content changes, the links may no longer work. It’s by no fault of your own, but if the link is there to help your audience, you want to make sure that they work.
2. Direct Sales: If you are in network marketing and connect to documentation from their website, there is a chance that changes may be made. This is critically important if a change is made to a product or service. The last thing you want to have happen is that a customer decides to click through your website to the final purchasing destination and they get a 404 error.
3. Your own links: When you make changes to your website, especially if you have really old blog articles, some of the internal links may have changed. It’s going to be hard to know if you caught them all unless you go through each post to make sure that everything goes where it is supposed to. This can happen if you link to a post and that post is no longer relevant or you otherwise delete it permanently.
How can you prevent this?
One of the ways that I check my links is with the WordPress plugin ” Broken Link Checker“. You’ll get sent an email anytime that a link no longer functions. This plugin has been invaluable to me keeping my website up to date. This can be something small that you add on to your virtual assistant’s task list. Ask them to watch for these emails to come through and if they do work on your website, update as necessary or notify you what is broken. Your customers will thank you and you will always look ahead of the game.
